Outdoor places to go to in Berlin:

Tiergarten
This 630-acre park is the perfect inner-city locale to let off steam. A zoo, lakes, meadows, trails and two beer gardens makes this a great place to let your kids run free. Rent a paddle boat on the lake, find hidden bridges, and walk overgrown paths.

Tempelhofer Park
Formerly the site of Berlin’s airport, the space was repurposed as a park in 2008. Highlights include a cycling trail, spacious picnic area with barbecues and ample urban gardens. It’s the place to come to fly a kite.

Berlin Zoological Garden
Located within the leafy Tiergarten, the polar bears, marine life and flora-filled grounds are super. Try to time your visit with animal feedings for extra action. You can pick up a cart for little kids at the entrance, so they don’t have to walk everywhere.

Waldhochseilgarten Jungfernheide
Open daily from March through October. The Waldhochseilgarten is Berlin’s largest and highest forest high ropes course, centrally located in Charlottenburg. Children can climb on their own in three children parcours. Adolescents and adults can choose between nine parcours. Included in the entrance fee is the climbing gear and an introduction to the courses, so even beginners can get the hang of things easily.

FEZ Wuhlheide Centre for Families
About 20 minutes away from the Berlin center by s-bahn. Amidst a large parc in the woods, there is this fabulous children’s and youth’s leisure centre. The recreation park invites families to an active outdoor stay. Playgrounds and sports fields, a lake and an open air stage offer a great variety of things to do. The highlight is the ‘palace’ for sportive and cultural activity and entertainment. In addition it offers: a swimming pool, sports hall, theatre halls, ballet rooms and a lot more for young and old.

Park at Gleisdreieck
Community-led public park with rose gardens and trails for skaters & joggers on an old railway site. 2 large playgrounds for kids, in-ground trampolines, basketball and soccer areas, a cafe and swings. A great place to bring the family and hang out on a sunny day. The extensive lawns provide plenty of space for a delicious picnic or impromptu ballgame. Children can discover animals and plants, play hide and seek or splash in the water-filled hollows.

Klunkerkranich
Garden in the Clouds!
Club, garden and beach bar: the Klunkerkranich in Neukölln is many things, but first and foremost it is the latest hotspot. Hipsters meet between the flower boxes on the roof terrace of the Neukölln Arcaden shopping centre to listen to the DJ’s tunes and watch the sun setting over the rooftops of Berlin. Spanish-inspired fusion cuisine is served in the restaurant. Fantastic stop for a drink or snack with the family.

Museums in Berlin to visit with children

Labyrinth Kindermuseum
This is a wonderful place to let preschool kids loose. It’s completely hands-on with lots of room to romp. Make sure your socks are clean as no shoes are allowed.

Legoland Discovery Centre
Immerse yourself in a world with more than 5 million Lego bricks. The heart of the Discovery Centre is the big build and play area, where thousands of Lego pieces wait to be put together, and successful creators can put the cars or jet skis they’ve built to the test by sending them down one of the big ramps. You can visit the show factory where they explain the whole ‘making-of’ process, and then relax with a movie in the 4D cinema or take a spin on the dragon ride.

Getting Around in Berlin

Purchase a two-, three- or five-day Berlin Welcome Card and you’ll get unlimited rides on Berlin’s comprehensive public transportation network, including the U-Bahn, S-Bahn and buses. The cards start at about 20 Euros for the two-day option. You’ll receive discounts at hundreds of sites, museums and tours. When an adult purchases a card valid for zones A, B and C, they can bring up to three kids between the ages of 6 and 14 on board for free. Children under 6 always ride free in Berlin!

Tip: The public bus 100 drives between Alexanderplatz and the Zoo, passing many of the major city sights. It is usually a double decker bus – extra fun points!
