Easy and delicious: Strawberries & Cream

Cityguide, Food, LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL, To eat

Going to Wimbledon or watching it at home, one thing always comes to mind during these two weeks: Strawberries and cream. The ultimate snack.

Wimbledon starts soon, and we are anticipating the event with a classic recipe – strawberries and cream! The tennis tournament would be incomplete without the classic combination of red juicy berries with cool whipped cream. And since we all love a good portion of traditions we are filling the fridge with the red summer fruits right now.

But how did this winning combination end up with tennis?
It was served at the first ever Wimbledon tournament in 1877. “It was probably two things: strawberries were in season at the time the tournament was played, and in Victorian England they had become a fashionable thing to eat,” says Johnny Perkins, the All England Club’s head of PR.  “They were part of afternoon tea, which had become a fashionable ritual, and that took root at Wimbledon.”

And pretty much ever since the strawberry has had its place as an indispensable accompaniment to the tennis.

Take note: On average 10,000 litres of cream and 28,000 kg of strawberries are eaten at the tournament each year.
